After our drive through Cottonwood and our visit to Tuzigoot and Clarkdale (Verde Canyon Railroad), we drove on up Route 89A to the historic mining town of Jerome, Arizona.
Jerome sits above what was the largest copper mine in Arizona and produced an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month. Today the mines are silent, and Jerome has become the largest ghost town in America.
After walking through town (just a bit), we walked on up the steps (probably about a couple hundred) to the streets above and on to the “Haunted Hamburger” restaurant we had heard so much about from folks at our park. There are tales far and wide about the ghosts that haunt much of eclectic Jerome, Arizona.
Although we didn’t personally experience and ghostly encounters, I have to say the hamburger was great, the service was super and the view from the veranda where we dined was breathtaking.
We’ll go back another time and plan on spending time experiencing all the shops, galleries, and vintners lining the narrow streets of Jerome.
